Day in the life - Nikita Brunetta

Nikita is a trainee solicitor based in Toronto. She originally joined as a paralegal in our London office and gained experience working on some of the largest projects in the UK. She is now working on various infrastructure projects across Canada.

What work do you do for Systech?

As a trainee solicitor at Systech Law, I have worked on a range of projects in both the United Kingdom and North America.

What is your typical day?

A typical day would include reviewing project agreements, schedules, and other contractual documents to assess the contractual risks. In addition, I review the claims register and liaise with legal to draft and respond to correspondence.

What are the interesting aspects of your work?

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team is always interesting as it provides me with a range of experience and insights from a broad spectrum of people. In addition, I have had the opportunity to work on P3 contracts and have been fortunate to represent both owners and general contractors. Currently, the most interesting aspect of my work is the collaborative approach of working in an Alliance Team.

What are the challenges?

Being a woman in construction does not come without its challenges, however, it has made me more determined to demonstrate my knowledge and skill set within the industry. Being in a male-dominated industry has not deterred me but has made me more empowered.

Working from home during Covid-19 has been a challenge for all but it has also provided the team with the opportunity to showcase our resilience and to work effectively by connecting virtually.

What training and support has Systech given you?

Systech has supported my development by providing me with valuable training. Also, throughout the year, Systech has arranged insightful seminars and workshops, which have covered different areas in construction law including payment provisions and adjudication.

What words of advice would you offer someone thinking of working for Systech?

The advice I would offer is to be hardworking and persistent. Continue to learn, network, and be willing to be exposed to experiences whether they are domestic or international. Being dependable is important for you and your team and my last piece of advice would be to not be afraid to ask for advice and help from others when needed.

What is the culture like?

Systech provides a positive workplace culture. All are encouraged within their work which is reflected in the overall performance of the company. Networking on an international basis and general fun between teams is encouraged through socials.

How has working for Systech helped you achieve your career goals?

Systech has provided me with on-going support and continues to nurture my skills at every stage of my career. From joining the company as a paralegal in the UK in 2018, to being offered a training contract, to relocating to Canada, Systech has supported and aided my goals.

What makes working for Systech different from the competition?

Working for Systech provides the opportunity to travel, work and live abroad. Another difference is the collaborative approach and open-door policy which is championed throughout the company. The ability to reach out to any team memberprovides a unique and refreshing working experience.

What has been your greatest achievement working for Systech?

My greatest achievement so far was being given the opportunity to train as a solicitor within the company. However, as I have continued to grow and progress , there are many things I am personally proud of such as my ability to build rapport and networking.

Tell us about a project where you have learnt a key lesson?

I was based on site for the construction of a Premier League football stadium. Having had no previous construction and on-site experience, I learnt valuable lessons about how projects operate and their associated safety and contractual procedures.
